Standing for tolerance means standing against intolerance.
Tolerance
Not being shitty to someone because of their demographics (gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc).
Also tolerance
Calling out intolerant behavior (calling out when someone is being shitty to someone else because of their demographics).
There's no paradox
There's no paradox because demographics and behavior are the not same thing
Standing for tolerance includes standing against intolerance. Said another way, standing for tolerance includes calling out bad behavior.
- Be tolerant of people's demographics
- Call out intolerant behavior
Example
If someone is constantly heckling women because they're women (behavior), they're behaving intolerantly to women (demographic).
If you call them out for their intolerant behavior, you're standing for tolerance.
- Tolerance = Being accepting of women, and
- Tolerance = calling out behavior that is intolerant of women
Another Way of Looking At It
If people are really struggling, perhaps think about it like this:
- Tolerance ≈ prosocial behavior
- Intolerance ≈ antisocial behavior
To maintain a prosocial group, there must be consequences for antisocial behavior (that's why we have laws and social norms).
- It's prosocial to accept people's demographics
- It's also prosocial to condemn antisocial behavior
Again: demographics ≠ behavior
