Hey Josh, been reading your blog for a while and decided to spring for your kettlebell swing challenge e-book/program. Will be starting at the the intermediate level tomorrow (I’ve already done my swings for today because this evening was going to be chaotic.) Anyway, I flipped through the material, and I am pretty satisfied that what I got was a good deal. I did a small little blurb about it on the Kettlebell Challenge SparkTeam on SparkPeople at: http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=4730x20249x38911668
One thing did stand out though. You referenced the ACE study on kettlebell calorie burn and on page 4 you summarize the results of the study as “Kettlebell Workouts”. It seems a tad misleading, since the ACE study was testing calorie burn of a snatch based workout. The two exercises are obviously similar, but it seems a bit misleading to omit that fact in the intro text of a workout focused on swings. Anyway, that is a very tiny nit in what otherwise appears to be a great program. I’ll let you know how things over the next 21 days. 🙂

Hi William!
You make a good point, and I totally get where you are coming from. In the first version of the book I discussed swings vs. snatches, and why I chose to do the program with swings instead, but my editor had me omit it, as complicated it significantly.
For someone who has excellent snatch form, you could just as easily do the whole program with snatches. I actually prefer swings in my fat loss workouts by far – they’re about two steps less technical, and the cadence is twice as fast with no rest.
In terms of similarity, the first 70% of a snatch is a swing. While the shoulder stability involved in finishing the snatch is a point of distinction, I would be shocked if it made any difference for fat loss. To me, swings and snatches are the same, the way that squats and lunges are the same.
In reality, the best reason to do a snatch over a swing is just that it has a fixed, measurable termination point, making it easy to count. In other words, it makes sense for kettlebell sport competition because you can objectively count it.
Anyway, it’s killer you read the study! And I totally get where you’re coming from.
I really liked the post you did at SparkPeople! I totally appreciate it!
Enjoy the program, and keep me posted on your progress!
