If you look at the two promotional posters above, you almost couldn’t tell which movie was which — same body almost exactly.
After ten years and two kids, that’s totally amazing.
Sure, I’m always interested in how someone got wicked lean, at any age. But staying lean after ten years and having two kids is way more impressive.
Lets see what she did:
Jessica Alba’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Workout
Jessica really has two different kinds of workouts. First was her “workout” workouts, and second was her dance workouts.
Alba has mentioned that her normal workouts include interval training, yoga, spinning, dance classes, lunges, squats, core work, and light arm weight workouts.
So, lots of variety. A+ on the interval training, squats and lunges. Spinning can be great interval training, so A+ for that too. F- for the light arm weights. Yoga is great for how you feel and how you move, but doesn’t do much for fat loss, so A+ for mind/body, D+ for fat loss.
Then she moved into dancing instruction and coreography for the movie. She did a few hours per day, five days per week. If there’s anything we’ve learned from Dancing With The Stars, it’s that dancing coreography training works, especially if you do it as a full time job.
And it seems to make a difference if you are learning complex and intense routines. People who learn intense coreography and spend more time dancing tend to be much leaner than people who take a Zumba class twice per week.
So we might notice that the people who get lean dancing are doing an absolutely silly amount of dancing. You probably don’t have the extra time to make dancing a part-time job, so that’s out.
Her regular routine workouts: Intervals, yoga, spin, dance classes, light weights, ect, will fit better into your schedule. It’s nothing extraordinary, except that she does it consistantly.
Jessica Alba’s Sinless Food Habits
Jessica has constantly talked about eating more organic produce and eating less pre-packaged and process foods.
Which actually sounds like… wait for it… Common sense!
She told SELF Magazine:
“I have the same food philosophy for myself as I do for my kids,” she explained. “We eat mostly lean protein and fresh fruit and vegetables, nothing processed or from a box, if we can. For me, when I don’t eat a ton of carbs, I have more energy. But I’ll for sure have a piece of chocolate. I will mow through a bowl of guacamole. If I’m not going to have dessert, I’ll have a martini.”
So she’s mostly having protein, healthy fats, and veggies, but she said she’ll have fruit also… and one piece of chocolate, or one drink.
It turns out that there isn’t any magic, except that she’s been on top of her eating for a very, very long time.
Jennifer ‘JJ Dancer’ Johnson (her dance teacher/personal trainer) told People Magazine:
“The secret to have a great bod and not having to kill yourself to look good is eating right.”
“That’s a strong point of Jess’s. She’s motivated nutritionally, and she eats a balanced diet of salads and proteins. If you’re eating right, that’s more than half the battle.”
A better use of most people’s time than to find the most amazing workout, or the most amazing diet, would be to work on diet habits like planning, preparing, and journaling what they eat.
“What” to eat, actually isn’t even an issue until you’ve got the consistency dialed in. And consistency is something you should build, slowly, over time. Once you do have your consistency dialed in, then it comes down to bumping up the quality and quantity of what you eat.
to know that celebrities aren’t movie-lean 100% of the time. They stay mostly in shape, most of the time, and then get wicked lean for each roll. Repeated cycles of getting lean for a role, easing off a little, then getting a little leaner for the next role, then easing off again. Just like in-season and off-season for sports.
What You Should Learn
Jessica Alba’s workouts have shuffled around a lot over the years — There always seems to be squats and lunges in there, yoga has been in there for a while, interval training, and useless light arm exercises.
The biggest thing is that she’s always doing something, and she ramps it up for each movie.
Her food has been tight for a very, very, very long time. Keeping the food on point — for three months or six months — can produce magical results for most people.
Keep your workouts and food tight for years, and you can stay within striking distance of abs.
