People are flipping their shizz over this video by this anthropology Phd and TED Fellow Christina Warriner:
And this is right on the heels of the release of Paleofantasy, a book by another Phd evolution prof Marlene Zuk, who also takes a swing at the *truth* of Paleo.
People on all sides are up in arms and Facebook battles have sprung up galore. Fitness experts once friends are now bitter enemies! In fact, I'm getting hate mail already, and I haven't even posted this yet!
It's fitness drama of Biblical proportions. Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!***
What Really Happened
So there are some peeps with way, way more credentials than most of the Paleo gurus, who are basically saying that a lot of The Paleo Diet is made up.
Loren Cordain, Phd, on the other hand, is a dude who's got like actual cred to back The Paleo Diet, and he says it isn't made up, that it's the truth.
There are academic heavies on both sides of this. I'll leave it to you to sort out the absolute truth about what paleolithic man ate. Lets talk a little about fat loss and how diets are put together.
That being said, no one is refuting that it works for fat loss. OF COURSE IT WORKS FOR FAT LOSS. Real food is the most obvious thing in the world.
Let me reiterate:
There are two things I want you to get about The Paleo Diet:
1.) It really works for fat loss to eat protein, fruit, vegetables and good fat
2.) The Paleo Diet is a made up diet (like all diets).
If you get those two things, then it should give you access to some really great principles for fat loss: Eat whole foods like protein, fruit, vegetables and good fats. And it should free you up: You don't have to be scared of brown rice anymore.
I've mentioned before on this blog that when Paleo Gurus try to do science on why they don't eat brown rice or quinoa, epic fail = their science.
If they were willing to admit that they made up the rules, and that brown rice and paleo doesn't fall into their made up rules it would be fine. Every diet has made up rules. Most all of them work if you follow the rules. If you know the rules are made up, then you don't start creating for yourself selective eating disorders.
Here is how I'll present it: "It's fun to eat like a caveman! And it works for fat loss! And here are the rules for caveman style eating that we made up!"
Remember: Diets have made up rules. Most diets work if you follow the rules. Remember the diets are made up, and there is nothing wrong with that.
There are two things I want you to get about The Paleo Diet:
1.) It really works for fat loss to eat protein, fruit, vegetables and good fat
2.) The Paleo Diet is a made up diet.
So I'd like you to enjoy your Paleo Diet and all of the results that come with it. People love it because it really works for fat loss to eat good whole foods like fruits and vegetables and good fats, and to eat protein at every meal.
And don't be scurred that you're gonna die if you have some brown rice once in a while.
Enjoy!
