Today, Thursday the 14th, I’m on a plane to Minnesota to be an Assistant Instructor at the RKC Kettlebell Certification.
On Thursday, I’m going to re-certify myself, with the other Assistant Instructors. So I’ve got to pass the Kettlebell Snatch Test:
100 snatches with a 53lb kettlebell in 5:00
And the technique test on the “Big Six” RKC Kettlebell Exercises:
- Swing
- Get Up
- Clean
- Snatch
- Military Press
- Goblet Squat
And then Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I get to assist with the training of the Candidate RKC’s. It’s really one of the most amazing things ever to get to be a part of new RKC’s getting trained and certified. I always think about how many people they are going to go out and teach the “Hard-Style” of kettlebell training to. It’s awesome.
And one thing I love about the RKC Certification is that it’s the only certification I know of that has an actual fitness standard. 100 snatches in 5:00 isn’t quite like climbing Mount Everest, but it’s going to require some solid training for most people.
One thing I have at stake, for myself, out of going back to the RKC is that I’m up to setting a new personal record in my military press. On Monday I military pressed the 80lb kettlebell for an easy single. At the RKC, with a little coaching from the masters, and being in the presence of all that awesomeness, I’m totally out to hit a new personal record. I really want to military press the 88lb (40kg) kettlebell. Which, not coincidentally, will be the kettlebell I need to press to recertify as a Level 2 RKC.
And in case you were wondering – After bulking up to 188lbs, I dropped back down to 182 (doing “park bench workouts”) for a few months. And ramping up my training for the RKC, I’m back up to 190.
It’s a far cry from the last RKC where I bulked up to 170 from 155. I gotta say after being the too skinny guy for most of my life, I feel much more badass at 190 (thanks Dan John for teaching me how)
So I’ve been doing lots of snatches, lots of pressing, lots of technique work on the big six – ’cause I gotta represent, y’all! I’ve even been doing lots of stretching, lots lots more than normal. Big gains in my hamstring flexibility (finally). Good fun.
